May Day

6:30am and myself, Richard Williams, Nigel Sluman and Matt Pringle set off from the car park at Mouldon Hill for a 3½hr  walk around the pool and canal.

En route we recorded a total 53 species (still checking) with the main highlights being a Little Egret over the River Ray, a single Common Sandpiper on banks of the pool, 2 possibly 3 Cuckoos with 2 males chasing each other by the canal and another/same bird by the car park. There were 2 Swifts over head at the canal, where a single Sand Martin was seen also. 3 or 4 Swallows in the fields feeding, several Reed Warblers, Sedge Warblers and Whitethroats singing. At least 3 Lesser Whitethroats, a few Blackcaps and there were quite a few Willow Warblers singing, but very few Chiffchaffs. A full list of species recorded below.
